Family beach within minutes of our seaside cottage.
A family beach is always important when considering a cottage rental holiday in Europe. Here on the Lleyn peninsula in Wales, we have over 200 miles of coastline, from Caernarfon in the North to Porthmadog in the South.
The Lleyn has many a family beach, some being awarded a Blue Flag, with excellent bathing qualities. Abersoch, Llanbedrog, Nefyn and Hell's Mouth Bay are recommended by the Good Beach Guide, all being within 15 minutes of our cottage rental accommodation here in Wales!
Around 20 beaches are easily accessible from our seaside cottage , from vast expenses of sands and dunes to rocky coves and costal inlets.
By far the most popular family beach from our cottage by the sea is Abersoch- or aptly re-named "The Welsh Riviera"! With a calendar full of sailing events, it offers one of the most internationally recognized sailing waters in Europe. With two sandy beaches, packed during the holiday season, Abersoch is renowned for its water sporting events, including sailing, surfing, jet skis, and much much more. Bistros, quaint craft shops, art galleries, clothing and jewellery designers offer so much temptation for the holidaymaker.
Both our seaside rental properties - Cae Garw farmhouse cottage overlooks Porth Neigwl or Hells Mouth. A south west facing rural beach, extremely popular with surfers and kayakers because of the relatively large waves. As far as windsurfing goes, if offers outstanding break waves for the most competent surfer in Europe.! It is a gently shelving 4 mile stretch of beach, but recent erosion makes the sand dunes at the furthest point unstable.
Pwllheli is the main town here on the Lleyn. With an extremely popular marina, it provides access to some of the best sailing waters in the UK, hosting many sailing championships and regattas. The yearly Seafood Festival lets you sample prime seafood delicacies, and two sandy beaches provides a vast expanse of sands and exceptional views to Cardigan Bay.
Llanbedrog is a National Trust Beach with brightly coloured beach huts. The picturesque sandy bay is in the shadow of a steep headland and situated on the south coast of the Lleyn Peninsula. Paddle in shallow waters, enjoy horse riding on the beach - while enjoying the peal of the local church bells on a Sunday morning ! A cottage by the sea, an art gallery and bistro completes the beach picture scenery.
Porthdinllaen - is another National Trust beach nestling on the north coast of the Lleyn peninsula, and home to the local Lifeboat Station. An old fishing hamlet in bygone years, it has a magnificent golf course on the headland and a pub right on the seashore. View local fishermen bringing their daily catch of fresh lobsters onto the shore.
Aberdaron, based on the tip of the peninsula provides safe bathing on gentle sloping beach. With only a few handful of shops, a pub on the beach and whitewashed cottages, the village was the last stopping point for the pilgrims back in the 13 Century, before their crossing to Bardsey Holy Island .Nearby , Whistling Sands family beach -is noted for its sand - which emits a squeaking/whistling sound when walking across it.
Nefyn- a small village on the west coast and a most popular family beach on the Lleyn. The sea has always an important part of the small town, and fishing particularly for herring became a prime trade many years ago, although still popular with local fishermen .
