Nefyn

Nefyn is a small coastal town on the north-west coast of the Lleyn Peninsula, about 15mins drive from our self-catering holiday rental cottages, and extremely popular for family holidays.

Nefyn, Morfa Nefyn and Porth Dinllaen form a magnificent 2 miles of sweeping bay and are popular with water-sports enthusiasts, with stunning scenery of the triple peaked Yr Eifl mountains (The Rivals).

The sea has always played an important part in Nefyn's economy, in the 18th Century around 120 shipping vessels were built here, and coastal trading such as fishing - particularly for herring became a prime trade. Indeed its Coat of arms bears 3 herrings. In the 1830's it was assumed that Porth Dinllaen, rather than Holyhead, would become the main port linking Britain and Ireland - which luckily wasn't the case!

The foundations of St Mary's church dates back to the 6th Century, and Nefyn was an important stopping point for the ancient pilgrims' route to Bardsey Holy Island. The church is now a maritime museum, and the weather vane is unusually shaped like a full-rigged three-master.

Nefyn beach itself is accessed by a steep road down from Nefyn- a sandy beach lying below cliffs, with parking, a cafe/shop, and public toilets.

Above the beach is a cliff path, and an easy circular walk will take you along the cliffs to Morfa Nefyn and Porth Dinllaen Lifeboat Station then onto Nefyn golf course with stunning views on both sides of the peninsula.
