Hell's Mouth Bay ( Porth Neigwl)

Hell's Mouth is a south western facing 4 mile stretch of unbroken shorline, a few miles from Abersoch - that can be seen from our self catering holiday cottage here in Wales. It is o popular as a wind surfing beach, it attracts the best surfers from all over Wales and the UK.

The beach is backed by steep clay cliffs with a rocky headland at each end - namely Cilan Headland on the eastern side and the slopes of Rhiw mountain on other. The cliffs suffer badly from erosion, especially on the western side, but otherwise there is miles of clean sand - the perfect mecca for surfing, windsurfing, sailing, water-skiing, kitesurfing, kite flying and wake-boarding in Wales .

Hells Mouth is the most consistent and one of the best surf spot in North Wales.A webcam located on Mynydd Cilan looking north west along the beach gives hourly updates on the swell.

Alternate surfing sites are Porth Ceiriad and Whistling Sands (Porth Oer). Both these bays offer good surfing in conditions that may be wrong for Hell's Mouth.

The beach is recommended for all levels of surfers, but only for intermediate to expert windsurfers. A reef in the eastern corner produces bigger swells, however strong currents makes the beach unsuitable for learners, as strong rip tide grind the boulders on the beaches. The beach is not really recommended for swimmers, as you do need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy the water.

Every July, part of the Wakestock event takes place here,( as well as Abersoch and Pwllheli) - where hundreds of wake boarders flock to Hell's Mouth to compete for the National Championships. During the evening, a music festival is held at Penyberth, Llanbedrog , with live performances from well known rock bands and DJ's.

Hells Mouth beach is a kite flyers oasis, its miles of flat hard sand the perfect place to carryout some of the best sporting fun there is. Local club meetings and sport shop demonstrations happen often on the beach.

This 4 mile stretch of coast has been the site of many a shipwreck. Facing south west, this long stretch of bay faces square on to the prevailing winds. Over the years, thirty or so vessels have met their end at this very site.

Abersoch is just two and a half miles away, with plenty of restaurants, bars, craft, clothes and surf shops. The nearby village of Llanengan has a pretty 15th century church, with a pub - "The Sun Inn" serving great food.

Hells Mouth provides great fishing for bass, flatfish, rays, dogfish, whiting and dabs and coalfish - although peak summer sees hundreds of holidaymakers in the surf rendering fishing impossible. It can get very weedy after storms at any time of year.
